BlepharoplastyThe look of your eyes plays a significant role in your overall facial appearance. In some cases, droopy or sagging eyelids can hide your eyes or give you a persistently “tired” look. Excess skin around your eyes can also make it more difficult to see clearly. If you’re unhappy with the appearance of your eyes or lids, the procedure that you may find valuable for your specific situation is called blepharoplasty. Learn about this advanced procedure, which is now available at the Chicago ophthalmology office of Dr. Mary Szatowski.

What Is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is the technical term for “lifting” your eyelids with surgery, which in turn changes the entire appearance of the eyes and makes them more clearly visible. It can also remove bags under the eyes and some of the folds that show on the eyelids. During the procedure, excess fat, muscle and sometimes skin is removed from the areas above and below the eyes through very small incisions. In some cases the incisions are made from the inside of the eyelid. When the procedure is complete the eye area shows minimal to no scars.

Things to Know in Advance of this Procedure
This eye surgery is an outpatient procedure can be completed in as little as 45 minutes under local anesthesia at Dr. Mary Szatowski's Chicago ophthalmology office. The healing process takes about a week and some patients are able to return to work shortly thereafter. Many patients are pleased with the results after an eyelid surgery. If you’re also concerned about lifting your eyebrows, talk to the doctor about what is called an Endotine device (eyebrow rejuvenator) or how Botox can supplement this procedure.

Blepharoplasty is an eyelid surgery that removes the excess fat, skin and muscles from the lower and upper eyelids.

The Cosmetic Benefits of Blepharoplasty

In most cases, a blepharoplasty is done for esthetic purposes because dropping eyelids make the eyes look puffy and tired. This can alter your appearance.

Other Reasons for Undergoing Eyelid Surgery

While you may want to just rejuvenate the eyes and lids, it’s also important to remember that eyelid surgery can improve your quality of life.

Heavy, droopy eyelids can cause vision problems. With heavy eyelids out of the way, it’s easier to see, and it’ll be safer to drive, operate machinery and complete other daily tasks that require good line of vision.

How Does the Blepharoplasty Procedure Work?

The duration of the procedure depends upon how much excess fat, skin and/or muscle needs to be removed.

The typical incision for a blepharoplasty is located underneath the lashes on the lower lids and in the crease of the upper eyelids. These incisions are very small, so it’s less likely for there to be scarring.

In some blepharoplasty cases, excess tissue doesn’t require removal, so Dr. Mary Szatowski will perform a transconjunctival blepharoplasty, which means the incision is located inside the lower eyelid.
