Posts for tag: Sun Exposure

While feeling the warm sun on your skin may make you feel relaxed, it won’t help your appearance in the long run. In addition to aging and smoking, sun damage can cause unwanted skin wrinkling, making you appear older than your years. The sun damages your skin by stimulating excess production of melanin, a dark pigment that can lead to sun spots or dark spots on your skin. In addition, sun exposure can break down elastic fibers in your skin, causing premature skin wrinkling.

As much as you might like to, you can’t take back the sunburn you got on the Navy Pier when you were 5 or when you decided to Skin carebake yourself in baby oil at the beach on Spring Break. However, you can turn back the clock with non-surgical aesthetic treatments at
Dr. Mary Szatowski’s Chicago, IL office using the MicroLaserPeel®.

Using the Sciton laser,
Dr. Mary Szatowski can start the process for reversing the damage incurred due to excessive sun exposure. The treatment is described as a cross between microdermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing. Instead of taking off the deeper layers of your skin, the
MicroLaserPeel® removes the outermost skin, also known as the epidermis. This removes the outer layer of damaged skin cells, allowing your skin to grow new, healthy skin.

Side Effects of the Peel
The Sciton MicroLaserPeel® may cause minimal side effects, but they typically subside within three to four days. This includes skin redness—as if you have a sunburn—and what is known as a “frosty” appearance where dry areas of skin may peel away. The MicroLaserPeel® is effective at treating a number of skin conditions, including:
·       Fine lines and wrinkles
·       Sun spots
·       Scarring
·       Keratosis
·       Pigmentation irregularities

Getting the Best Results
While a single treatment can refresh your skin, you can typically undergo the specialized treatments anywhere from every one to two months. Although you may not be able to take back those excess sun exposure times, you can work together with our practice to recapture a youthful appearance.

Dr. Mary Szatowski also reminds her patients that it is never too late to practice good sun safety habits. This includes wearing sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or greater each time you step outside the house—even in the heart of Chicagoland’s winter. The sun can always cause damage, even when its rays are not as apparent. When you are outside in the sun (especially when sweating) for a prolonged time period, re-apply frequently and wear sweatproof sunscreen to ensure you are fully protected.
